What is High Efficiency AC?
High efficiency AC is defined by the SEER rating and the EER of the air conditioning and heating system. Increasing your SEER and EER rating for your system reduces the amount of energy that is required to operate and reduces the amount of emissions that your system produces. The investment into going green is not nearly as expensive as it once was, while it is true that high efficiency systems are more expensive on the front end, they can save up to 40% off of your utility bill. These energy savings pay for most high efficiency systems in under five years.
What Is SEER or EER?
SEER is defined as Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This measures air conditioning and heat pump cooling efficiency, which is calculated by the cooling output for a typical cooling season divided by the total electric energy input during the same time frame.
EER is defined as Energy Efficiency Ratio. This is the ratio of the cooling capacity of an air conditioner in British Thermal Units (BTU) per hour, to the total electrical input under certain conditions.
What SEER Rating Is Right For Me?
This is a question that is asked quite often. The correct SEER rating for you may be very different for somebody else. This is because everyone is comfortable at different temperatures. That being said a good rule of thumb that most contractors go by is 16 SEER. 16 SEER is where most people get the best “bang for their buck”. The return value of moving from your old air conditioner, most of which are between 5 to 10 SEER, to a new high efficiency AC system depends on many factors such as home insulation, duct work, attic insulation, radiant barriers, and several other key factors. Most homeowners see a savings on the electric bill of 20 %to 40%.
